INBDE Results: When Scores Arrive, What the Report Shows, and What 75 Means

Here is the one rule JCNDE actually publishes: the JCNDE strives to report results within four weeks of your examination date, and in most cases results are reported within three weeks (2026 Candidate Guide, p. 19). That is the entire official timeline. There is no published release day, no published release time, and no published statement about whether results go out one at a time or in batches — so every "results drop on a particular weekday" claim you have read in a forum or group chat is unsourced lore, not policy.

Where results appear: you view your results online by signing into your DENTPIN account at ADA.org/DENTPIN — the same account that anchors your application. Before anything reaches that account, your examination results go through a series of quality-assurance checks, and results are also audited before distribution as routine QA (Candidate Guide, p. 19). That QA window is part of why the timeline is measured in weeks rather than days, and it is why the only reliable way to learn your result is the account itself: results are released through your DENTPIN account after those checks, and JCNDE describes no other channel.

Practical reading of all this: check your DENTPIN account, not your inbox and not a countdown thread. If four full weeks pass with nothing posted, that is the point at which following up with JCNDE is reasonable — before then, silence is within the published window.

Your result does not go only to you. The $890 examination fee already includes official results reporting to three kinds of recipients: you, up to three licensing jurisdictions — if you requested them at the time of application — and your CODA-accredited dental program (Candidate Guide, p. 22).

Two of those deserve a closer look:

• Your dental program. If you are currently enrolled in a CODA-accredited program or graduated from one within the last five years, you consent at application to your results being shared with the program dean and the dean's designee(s) (Candidate Guide, p. 19). This is part of the application contract, not an optional setting.
• Dental boards. Jurisdictions you named at application typically receive results within the same four-week window, and the report they receive includes a history of your NBDE results alongside the INBDE result (Technical Report, pp. 36–37).

Adding recipients later — a board you did not name at application, or an application service — costs $55 per additional report (Candidate Guide, p. 22). You request these yourself by signing into your DENTPIN account and using the "Requests" tab (Candidate Guide, p. 19). For internationally trained dentists sending results to ADEA CAAPID: ADEA publishes that reports requested through the ADA portal reach CAAPID within five business days — that delivery figure is ADEA's, for the CAAPID flow; JCNDE itself publishes no delivery time for additional reports.

Two more distribution rules worth knowing before test day, because both are irreversible: scores cannot be voided at your request once you have completed any part of the examination (Candidate Guide, p. 19) — there is no "don't score this attempt" option — and if a test-security or misconduct issue occurred, your results reports may contain information about the incident at JCNDE's discretion (Candidate Guide, p. 19).

The INBDE is reported as "pass" or "fail," and candidates who pass see only the word "Pass" — no numeric scale score, no percentile, no breakdown (Candidate Guide, p. 18). JCNDE adopted pass/fail-only reporting in 2012 (Technical Report, p. 36), so this is a long-settled policy, not a recent change.

Sit with what that means, because it answers several questions candidates spend real energy on:

• There is no "high pass." A candidate who cleared the standard comfortably and a candidate who cleared it narrowly receive identical reports, and the licensing jurisdictions that receive results see the same pass/fail outcome.
• You cannot retake the INBDE to "improve" a pass — there is no number to improve, and the Candidate Guide bars retaking after a pass unless a dental board or regulatory agency requires it (Candidate Guide, p. 21).
• No prep company can tell you what "score" you passed with. The number exists inside JCNDE's scoring system, but it is never released to passing candidates.

If your plan depends on presenting a numeric result — some residency or admissions contexts ask — the honest answer is that for INBDE passers since 2012, no such number is reported. Programs that work with INBDE candidates know this.

A failing result is the one case where JCNDE shows you real numbers — and the fail report contains more usable planning data than most candidates expect, because almost nobody explains its contents. Here is what the primary sources say you receive:

1. Your numeric overall scale score on the 49–99 scale (Candidate Guide, p. 18; Technical Report, p. 36). This is the number the pass/fail decision rode on.
2. Performance information across all 13 published content dimensions — the three Clinical Content areas and the ten Foundation Knowledge areas — provided expressly for remediation planning (Candidate Guide, p. 18; Technical Report, pp. 36–37).
3. A graphical depiction of that 13-area performance, with numeric scores placed on a common scale, plus explanatory text (Technical Report, pp. 36–37). Because the per-area numbers sit on one common scale, you can line your areas up against each other and see which ones sat lowest.

Read the design intent in that last line carefully: the common scale exists so you can compare your own areas against each other and target remediation. The published description is of a self-relative diagnostic — JCNDE does not describe the report as ranking you against other candidates, and no published cohort baseline appears in it. Treat any claim about how your per-area numbers compare to a national average as unsupported.

Three fine-print rules that change how you should read the document:

• The pass/fail decision is made solely on the overall scale score — never on the per-area numbers (Candidate Guide, p. 18). The 13-area breakdown is diagnostic, not a set of per-area hurdles; no single low area failed you by itself.
• The overall score is the anchor; the areas are the map. A 73 with two deep valleys and a 68 with uniform mid-level performance are different problems needing different plans — the report gives you exactly the data to tell them apart.
• JCNDE publishes the report's contents, not its page layout. Any "sample INBDE score report" image circulating online is a reconstruction, not an official document — trust the fields listed above, not a mock-up.

The INBDE is scored on a scale from 49 to 99, in one-point increments, and the minimum passing score is 75 (Candidate Guide, p. 18; Technical Report, p. 36). The exam is criterion-referenced: your result depends on whether you met a fixed standard, not on how other candidates performed that day. There is no curve and no pass quota.

Now the myth this page exists to kill. A scale score is not a percentage of questions answered correctly, and the Candidate Guide addresses the "one more question" instinct in its own words:

"A scale score of 74 does NOT mean that a candidate would have passed the examination if they had answered one more question correctly." — 2026 INBDE Candidate Guide, p. 18

Why doesn't percent-correct map onto the scale? Because the scoring model weighs which questions you answered correctly, not just how many. The Technical Report names the model: a three-parameter logistic (3PL) item response theory model (Technical Report, Ch. 8, pp. 26–27), under which each item contributes according to three measured characteristics — its difficulty, its quality (how well it discriminates between stronger and weaker candidates), and its susceptibility to guessing (Candidate Guide, p. 18). Multiple equated forms of the exam exist, and equating places scores from different forms on a common measurement scale, so a result means the same thing regardless of which form you drew (Candidate Guide, p. 18; Technical Report, Ch. 8).

Four practical consequences:

1. You cannot compute your own score, and neither can any prep company. JCNDE publishes no conversion table from practice-question performance to the 49–99 scale — none exists. Treat any "raw score to 75" converter as fiction.
2. There is no penalty for guessing (Candidate Guide, p. 18). An unanswered question can only cost you; a guess can only help. Answer everything.
3. Some of the 500 items are experimental and unscored. They look identical to scored questions and are administered randomly throughout the examination; the data they generate qualifies items for future forms (Candidate Guide, p. 18; Technical Report, pp. 24–25). JCNDE does not publish how many items on the current form are unscored — so mid-exam self-assessment ("I've missed too many") is doubly unreliable: you know neither the weight of what you missed nor whether it counted at all.
4. When the performance standard is updated, the scoring scale is modified so that 75 continues to mark the minimum pass (Candidate Guide, p. 18). The number 75 is an anchor point on a maintained scale, not a fixed fraction of the test.

The passing standard behind the scaled 75 is set by people, through a documented procedure — and knowing that procedure is the antidote to conspiracy theories about the exam "getting secretly harder."

The current standard was set using the Bookmark standard-setting method (Lewis, Mitzel, Mercado & Schulz, 2012) — not the Angoff method some prep sources name (Technical Report, Ch. 9, pp. 31–32). In January 2024, JCNDE convened a 10-member panel of subject matter experts at ADA headquarters for two days (Technical Report, p. 31). Each panelist worked through an Ordered Item Booklet — one exam item per page, arranged in ascending difficulty — and placed a bookmark at the last item a minimally competent, "just qualified" candidate would have at least a two-thirds chance of answering correctly. The cut score was derived from the median bookmark placement across three rounds of judgment (Technical Report, pp. 31–32).

The JCNDE approved the new performance standard at its May 17, 2024 meeting (JCNDE Unofficial Report of Major Actions, May 17, 2024), and it was implemented on June 1, 2024 (Technical Report, p. 32). The scoring scale was adjusted so that 75 continued to mark the minimum pass — which is why you cannot compare a post-June-2024 "75" to an earlier one by the number alone.

The cohort impact was real: JCNDE's own Table 16.1 shows a 20.8% total failure rate across all 12,239 candidate administrations in 2025 — the first complete calendar year in the table under the new standard (Technical Report, p. 43). Every result is already audited once: JCNDE audits results before distribution as routine quality assurance (Candidate Guide, p. 19). What the formal results audit adds is a second, candidate-requested check of your specific result.

The mechanics, all from the 2026 Candidate Guide:

One precision note that says a lot about why this page cites documents rather than web pages: as of this page's verification date, one JCNDE web page still displays an older $65 audit fee, while the controlling 2026 Candidate Guide (updated 08/04/2026) states $105. The Candidate Guide notes that candidates are bound by the policies and procedures in effect at the time of their test administration, and its fee table is the controlling document — confirm the current figure at the source when you file. Prep sites quoting $65 are reading the stale page.

Set expectations honestly before spending the fee: JCNDE publishes no statistics on audit outcomes — there is no published data on how often an audit changes a result in either direction. The audit is a verification procedure, not an appeal, and its outcome is final. Given that results already pass through QA checks and a routine audit before release, the requested audit is best understood as bought certainty; if what you actually want is a path back to a pass, the 13-area breakdown in your fail report is the higher-yield document.

Does a passing INBDE result expire? JCNDE does not publish an expiration for a passing result — the Candidate Guide sets none. But that is not the same as a guarantee of indefinite validity: individual licensing boards and dental programs may impose their own recency requirements on examination results, so verify with the specific board or program you are applying to. What the Candidate Guide does say: candidates who pass may not retake the INBDE unless a dental board or regulatory agency requires it (p. 21).

What counts as an attempt is defined precisely: you have used an attempt once you are seated at a test-center computer and have electronically agreed to the confidentiality statement (Candidate Guide, p. 21). Leaving mid-exam does not un-use it, and — as covered above — a completed attempt cannot be voided at your request.

Your attempt history travels with your results. Results reports disclose all of your attempts across NBDE Part I, NBDE Part II, and the INBDE (Candidate Guide, pp. 18, 21). Two details inside that rule:

• For candidates who tested before 2012, when numeric reporting still applied, numerical scores for those prior attempts are still reported (Candidate Guide, p. 18).
• The disclosure is a history, not a penalty: for the INBDE's own retake limits, INBDE attempts are counted independently of prior NBDE attempts (Candidate Guide, p. 21) — a candidate with unsuccessful NBDE history starts the INBDE's five-year/five-attempt clock fresh.

The planning takeaway: every attempt becomes a permanent line in the record a board reads, which is one more reason to book an attempt when you are ready rather than to "see what it's like."

After a pass. Your report says "Pass," and the reporting machinery does most of the next step for you: the jurisdictions you named at application receive official results, typically within the same four-week window, and any board you did not name can be added for $55 through the "Requests" tab in your DENTPIN account. From there the path is jurisdiction-specific — each licensing board sets the requirements that remain beyond the written examination. After a fail. The retake rules, in one line each (all from Candidate Guide, p. 21): a minimum 60-day wait between unsuccessful attempts; at most four administrations in any 12-month period; a requirement to pass within five years of your first attempt or five attempts, whichever comes first — after which testing is limited to once every six months; and none of these limits is subject to appeal.

But the calendar is the wrong place to start. Start with the document JCNDE just gave you:

1. Read the 13-area graphic as a study map. Your per-area numeric scores sit on a common scale — rank your areas from lowest to highest, and let the lowest areas claim the largest share of the runway. That ranking is the most individualized study data any INBDE candidate ever receives.
2. Distinguish depth from breadth. A report with two deep valleys calls for rebuilding those areas from foundations; a uniformly middling report calls for volume and timed practice across the board. Same "fail," different plans.
3. Get an external reading before re-registering. The 60-day minimum is a floor, not a schedule. The pass-rate data's clearest lesson is that repeating unchanged preparation is the pattern to break — take the time the report says you need.
