For dental license renewal in Alabama, dentists need 20 hours / 1 year (annual) and dental hygienists need 12 hours / 1 year (annual). Dental assistants: No state CE requirement for dental assistants (CPR required only for assistants aiding in oral conscious sedation; DANB-certified assistants follow separate DANB annual CE renewal).. Annual renewal; CE must be completed in the 12-month period Oct 1 – Sep 30. Dentists: no more than 1/2 of the 20 hours may be by self-study/analog or digital media, journals, internet/correspondence/distance courses; must maintain current BLS via LIVE training (2–4 hrs, AHA/ARC/equivalent), min 1 hr infectious disease control annually, and min 1 hr ethics annually. Hygienists: minimum 6 of the 12 hours must be LIVE training; must maintain current BLS via live training (2–4 hrs) and min 1 hr infectious disease control annually.
